Dedication to the Athletes

OK In the spirit of this website I will honestly try to behave "properly"

As you all know there are things going on in COS.that are troubling no matter which side of the issue you are on. Many of you have been in TKD a long time. You know the old buried bodies, the scandals, the strong persons and ummmm less strong(thats kind of positive). The reason I am posting is , as individuals, you need to speak up and out. Speak from your hearts and not your ref status. The outcome of this battle may not go Askinas' and Bob G's way. If the rumblings hold true the AAU is going to pick up a lot of new members. The USAT will need alot fewer refs. I say this because I implore you to think less of your status and more of the kids. You all have other lives. If you lost your A 1 tomorrow life would go on. But if you do not speak out now(either way) that you carry with you till you re laying there at the end saying....the one thing I regret.....

Many of you voice to compatriots things  you "wouldn t dare say out loud" Think about that last sentence. Think about. These things you hold inside...Do you feel them in your heart and soul. I MEAN REALLY FEEL THEM. Then by God say them. Now is the time. I know some of you IR's and I respect you. But I do NOT respect your silence. You are good men and women. I implore you this one time Speak out. Thanks for listening and these words are meant for all, those that believe what that crazy JOH says and those that oppose him. Have a good day and may God bless us all.

By the way, I am not running for anything. I really believe these words. Actually I would have preferred earthier words but this is your house. TY

Re: Dedication to the Athletes
Gee Mr. Hall, the referees I know have been speaking up for years. The difference between what you are doing and what they are doing is that they put their names and reputations on the line when they speak up. They sign their letters and address them to the people who actually have something to do with the situation in question. They WORK to resolve the problems, and dedicate themselves unequivocally to providing the best referees possible for the competitors, rather than taking their toys and going home when things do not go their way.

Ummmm maybe... but I am not talking about TRUE I am talking about individual people. It is difficult to answer you and always be as you say "positive" feel like my hands are tied. How many of you have written Askinas and the board members and put strong words in writing. I don t mean writing a suggestion in very proper mild languange. In other words, don t always look over your left and right shoulders to make sure your compadres are with you and all is PC. And that rep you talk about, is that the one that all you talk to each other about or do you ever disguise yourself and get into the crowds and hear what we say. Because I am on here telling you what I feel.

ummmm yea well thats the same reason parents remain silent. And not sure I buy that because refs are closer to a tenured position than any other participant in TKD. Or are you saying that if the wrong thing is said, certain assignments might not be available. hmmmm well thats another issue isn t it.

Re: Dedication to the Athletes

Mr. Hall,

On the issue of speaking up to the USAT administration... I am sure I'm not alone in saying that Yes, I wrote to Mr. Askinas, Yes I was straightforward and very clear about decisions that I thought were wrong.  I don't beat around the bush, but I also do not denigrate. I expressed where I thought different choices might take us in a better direction.   I did that also with Mr. Gambardella.   I did not write often.  But Yes, I speak up.  I'm sure many others have, as well.  But are they listening?

Re: Dedication to the Athletes

I too wrote to the Bob many times last year and my tone was very different with him than it was with Askinas. I gave Askinas  the benefit of the doubt with Friello, with TRUE, but when I started digging the more I saw the more blown away I was. And then the coaching program brought much of it in focus. And the angrier I became at Bob and the interim board. This didn t happen under Askinas. This was long in the planning. You know, transparent to those that have the correct glasses. Man I was duped and I admit it. I was at that first meeting in COS in May 2003 as some of you were. While the structure presented was as is, the tone and spirit of that meeting was a bit different than what we got.

Are they listening Lois? Yea, I think they are. I have e mailed the board, all of them with some of my suspicions. You have all read my stuff to Askinas. To Friello(yes I know you guys  peeeek at oe), and to the dojang owners. And later tomorrow to parents.  Friello, I think was a victim but bears a little responsibility himself(and I still condemn using the athletes the way he did for the Open) That said, the USAT did far worse. Noone will ever convince me that scheduling wasn t........ yeah. The links with Perez are proliferate. And how did they ever think they could ever institute a fair coaching excellent program on $600,000 and another $3-4000000 from coaching fees. BTW you guys need to get bigger piggy banks. Its your turn next year. Easier to take one group to the cleaners at a time. OMG just think what might happen if the membership all got angry at one time. What might David do? Anyway, that was a very long winded yes Lois, they are listening and I speculate they are squirming a bit. And you know what....they deserve it. (opps that was a little neg sorry Jeanette) BTW I would like to thank Jenette for posting my stuff. And TY you all for listening. Now GO WRITE OR CALL DAVE

Re: Dedication to the Athletes
I agree, it's our turn next year.  Looking at the HLTC web site shows that referees will be required to attend regional training camps to help with scrimmages.  Now I firmly believe that working real matches is the only way to get better, learn to anticipate problems, and be able to react appropriately to emergent conditions.  I'm just not sure I want to pay $500 to $1000 to do it.  I've already cancelled my plans to go to Portland because the plane ticket is $455, somewhat less if I want to layover in Dallas, and I have NO confidence in what the future holds.

Re: Dedication to the Athletes
Fortunately for us, unfortunately for the athletes, referees do not have to referee for a living. We do it for the athletes.

If, in fact a program like the one that is proposed for the coaches is imposed for referees, most will not be able to afford it and will have to limit their refereeing to local tournaments, leaving the athletes with no referees. Too bad.

Hopefully by next year Mr. Askinas will have had a chance to learn a bit more about TKD and will have come to understand the problems with the proposed programs.
