Re: Board Breaking

I was around in the days of height and distance breaking, but those have since gone by the wayside it seems except in some demonstrations.  My point is that there is not NOW a reason to standardize to a higher authority, be it USAT, WTF or Kukkiwon,  and perhaps is a good time to 'reinvent the wheel' and  see what works locally.

We still have plenty of local competitions here that include 'players choice' station breaking and the astounding variety of subjective measurments is just befuddling.  I personally prefer the blind 'speed' breaks because when the player turns around there is no telling what they are going to throw at the boards.  Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but it can be interesting.  It also makes quite a difference what the ring sets up as breaks.  As long as they are the same within the division, there is no reason they cannot be varied between divisions.

One significant note:  If you try this, do not shield a holder's face with a board.  That was a messy mistake once.

Pesonal note to Master Harris.  Do you remember putzing around Tulsa in a Prius and being entertained by a live edition of Cops?  (Well, not really, but it seemed like it at the time.)  Just wondering if the Doctor remembers me or has connected the name.

Grant

Re: Board Breaking
Mr. Marlenee, I agree that now is a great opportunity to experiment with new ways of conducting Breaking competitions, and to make suggestions, based on those trials, as to how we would like to see those competitions conducted. With regard to the personal note, I DO remember having an excellent opportunity to conduct a Referee seminar there in Tulsa. Afterwards, I was treated to some sightseeing around Tulsa. Lo and behold, helicopters (Police, Rescue Squads, Fire Department) swarmed in on a local park that we were visiting. (That explains the reference to Cops) As I recall, a body was floating down the river near that park and there was an intensive search that took place while we were present. It made for an unforgettable adventure in my book. I do remember the face with the name, and I will take this opportunity to thank you publicly for the wonderful courtesies and hospitality extended to me during that brief visit.
