How old should you be to start refereeing
Modified By Jeannette on 3/29/2006 9:32:46 AM)
Master Harris-

I was curious on your take on the issue of what age can a person start to referee. I am not talking a national level, or regional level event, but more local/small level tournaments. You have to have some experience/age for centering, but I am refering to being a corner judge.

Thanks,

Mike

Re: How old should you be to start refereeing
Rather than you age as a criteria to allow people to begin the pursuit of a career as a Taekwondo Referee, I would rather use the Red Belt Level as an entry designator. My reason would be to allow for some Taekwondo experience and a possible understanding of the competition side of Taekwondo. Not all Red Belts are created equal, just as is the case in any corner of the life experience. However, using the Red Belt criteria as a starting point ensures that the person is (somewhat) dedicated to learning Taekwondo, and that the person is gaining practical experience in Taekwondo. I might even allow for a differentiation that allows for Red Belts with Taekwondo competition experience rather than Red Belts who pusue solely the martial arts (non-competitive) side of Taekwondo. Of course, in the case of younger children, I can understand the need to specify age limitations. After all, do we want 8 year old Red Belts with competition experience to serve as Corner Judges at local tournaments. Probably not. So, I would arbitrarily choose the age of 14, coupled with the Red Belt and competition experience as considered criteria to use when trying to determine when someone should be allowed to begin the study of the art of becoming a Taekwondo Referee.
