Re: Size Differential
Ms Lewis, you are much too kind. It is YOU who are to be applauded for the volunteer work that you do in support of our Taekwondo athletes. You and others like you make up the corps of officials that are very instrumental in the development and selection of our athletes.

I hope that you will continue your endeavors to improve and to serve the Taekwondo community. And, I look forward to seeing you again on a mat in a yet to be determined arena.

Re: Size Differential

From Master Harris:

A push is a push, whether open-handed, closed-fisted, with the trunk, with the shoulders, etc. If the action displaces the opponent to gain an advantage for the pusher, the action should result in a penalty. Any point(s) gained as a result of the illegal act of pushing must be annulled.

From Ms Lewis original post:

While being pushed backward, the little guy extended his open hands against his competitors hogoo...pushed off while being pushed backward, and scored several times with double kicks. I did not warn him or kyungo him for pushing as I felt he was reacting to being pushed and also he did not displace his competitor by a push in the slightest, quite the opposite.

So I have to ask - if the competitor placed open hands on the opponent but does not displace them - is that a push or not?

Thanks and have a great day!

Re: Size Differential
Ms DiPace, it is great to make your acquaintance, though it is over cyerspace. In response to your question, a push is not a push until the action of exerting force in an effort to displace a competitor with a part of the body, in order to gain a competitive advantage, takes place. Just having the open hands on the hogoo does not constitute the act of pushing.

As with all fellow referees that I have not met in person, I look forward to meeting you in person at a competition somewhere.

Re: Size Differential

Hi Master Harris,

So in Ms Lewis's situation as she described it since the little guy didn't displace the big guy when he had his hands on the hogu and "pushed off", displacing just himself and not the big guy, then she was correct in not assessing a penalty?

I thought we met at JOs in San Antonio last year... but I could be mistaken.

Have a great day!

Re: Size Differential
Ms DiPace, in the case that you cite, I think that the call is discretionary. Things to consider - is the smaller competitor attempting to dispalce the larger opponent, but cannot because of the size difference? Is the smaller opponent trying to get his/her disctance by using the ope hands, thus pushing him/herself back and away from the larger opponent? These are questions that can best be answered by observing the match in progress.

So, I can not say whether she was right or not right in her choice of not assessing the penalty against the smaller competitor. In any case, it is, of course, the Referee's call in situations like that. The Referee should be able to substantiate the action taken or the lack of action taken when/if asked by the Referee Supervisor.

We may have met in San Antonio, but my mind is like a steel sieve! :-)
