Stanford Taekwondo Spring Open 2006
Dear referees,

I hope you've all been doing well since we last met at the NCTA Championships at MIT.

As the Referee Chair of the 2006 Stanford Taekwondo Spring Open, to be held at Maples Pavilion on the beautiful Stanford campus on Saturday, June 3, 2006, I would like to invite you to become part of our highly-acclaimed referee team. Maples Pavilion underwent major renovations a year ago, and now features a state-of-the-art Jumbotron-style (four-sided, center-hung) scoreboard with video and replay capability. Using this prominent display to show upcoming match numbers for competitors and replay exciting fights in the rings for the first time last year was a huge hit. We humbly believe we are one of the best-run taekwondo tournaments in the nation, and that is why I would like to extend this invitation to excellent experienced referees like you to come join us as a refereeing official in the 2006 Stanford Taekwondo Spring Open.

We feature match numbering (so every competitor knows when she needs to show up -- two fights ahead of her own), 6 rings with wireless electronic scoring equipment from TrueScore (so judges do not have to worry about unplugging the handsets from the cables by accident) with four corner judges, reasonable tournament entry fees for the benefit of all competitors (only $40 for both poomsae and sparring), experienced crowd-control personnel (so you as a referee do not have to deal with coaches and spectators that should not be around your ring), and a maximum cap of competitors at 500 (so you know you won't have to work into the late hours). Unlike last year, we won't be holding a USAT Referee Certification Seminar this year because of the low turnout in 2005, but there will be a seminar on Saturday, May 20, led by Prof. Misha Thackrey, our tournament Head Referee.

For your kind volunteering you will receive a special recognition souvenir and one-night complimentary shared accommodation at our official tournament hotel. During the tournament you will also receive a complimentary lunch and unlimited access to our concession stand. Afterward, revel (or relax) with other referees and special guests at our invitation-only banquet.

If you need to fly in, Stanford University is conveniently located between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and San Jose International Airport (SJC), and both discount airlines Southwest and JetBlue fly into and out of SJC.

Our comprehensive tournament Web site can be found at http://tkd.stanford.edu/spropen2006 ; I meticulously set up the head contact rules so they adhere to the current USAT standards (e.g. no head contact for competitors 7 and under, light head contact for black belts 8-13). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Coach Tim Ghormley and I look forward to hearing some good news from you soon.

Yours,
Vincent Lo
