Refereeing for 2007 Stanford Taekwondo Spring Open?
Dear fellow Taekwondo referee colleagues,
As Head Referee of the 2007 Stanford Taekwondo Spring Open, to be held at Maples Pavilion on the beautiful Stanford campus on Saturday, May 26, 2007, I would like to invite you and your experienced colleagues to become part of our highly-acclaimed referee team. Maples Pavilion underwent major renovations two years ago, and now features a state-of-the-art Jumbotron-style (four-sided, center-hung) scoreboard with video and replay capability. Using this prominent display to show upcoming match numbers for competitors and replay exciting fights in the rings has proved to be a huge hit. I humbly believe the Stanford Taekwondo Spring Open is one of the best-run Taekwondo tournaments in the nation, and that is why I would like to extend this invitation to an excellent referee like you to come join us as a refereeing official in the 2007 Stanford Taekwondo Spring Open.
We feature match numbering (so every competitor knows when she needs to show up--two fights ahead of her own), six Olympic-size 10x10 matted rings (new this year in preparation for us hosting the National Collegiates next year!) with wireless electronic scoring equipment from TrueScore (so judges do not have to worry about unplugging the handsets from the cables by accident) with four corner judges, reasonable tournament entry fees for the benefit of all competitors (only $50 for both poomsae and sparring), experienced crowd-control personnel (so you as a referee do not have to deal with coaches and spectators that should not be around your ring), and a maximum cap of competitors at 500 (so you know you won't have to work into the late hours). We won't be holding a USAT Referee Certification Seminar this year because of the previously low turnout, but I will be leading a referee seminar at the ACSR Studio from 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, May 19, as well as a referee refresher from 7 to 9 PM at Maples Pavilion on Friday, May 25, with complimentary meals provided at both sessions.
An appointed referee will receive a special recognition souvenir and one-night complimentary shared accommodation at our official tournament hotel. During the tournament she will also receive a complimentary lunch and unlimited access to our concession stand. Afterward, she can revel (or relax) with other referees and special guests at our invitation-only banquet.
If you need to fly in, Stanford University is conveniently located between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and San Jose International Airport (SJC), and both discount airlines Southwest and JetBlue fly into and out of SJC.
Our comprehensive tournament Web site can be found at tkd.stanford.edu/spropen2007 ; I meticulously set up the head contact and equipment rules so they adhere to the current USAT standards (e.g. no head contact for competitors 7 and under, light head contact for black belts 8-13). We are requesting all referees wear black pants, and we will provide polo shirts. The referee meeting will be held at 8:30 on the morning of the tournament.
On a side note, our Stanford Taekwondo Summer Camp has always been an elite camp targeting campers of 12 to 17 years of age, though this year we are planning to extend our invitations to color belts as well. The camp has received the highest praise from all participants over the years. If you go to tkd.stanford.edu/summercamp , you will be able to register online directly, with a special early-bird gift which will run out soon. Please help us spread the word about this event, which will take place on August 11 through 15 this year!
If you can come yourself, of course that will be great. But even if you can't, please tell all your referee friends to contact me if you think they may be interested in volunteering on May 26. It's the first time we are expanding from 3 to 4 corner judges to adhere to USAT standards, and it will be a challenge from me to recruit sufficient experienced referees and judges this year. And please spread the word about our Spring Open and summer camp to interested parties who may turn into happy participants! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Coach Tim Ghormley and I always look forward to hearing from you.
If you do decide to attend the referee seminar on May 19 or the referee refresher on May 25, or volunteer as a referee or judge on May 26, please let me know so I can get a head count.
Cheers,
Vincent Lo
