i am looking at making an option for RingMaster to not allow head points... my question to all the referees is how would you like the handgrips to operate... here are the choices i have come up with:
1) the top button is disabled and pressing it has no effect
2) pressing the top button is the same as pressing the trigger
which would be better/easier?
thanks!

for any division with no head contact...
I think that's a great idea. This would especially be true at an event such as Junior Nations where there are MANY new, and inexperienced, referees.
I also prefer option 1, to disable the top button. If we allow the top button to score body shots it may lead to a more accurate match result in the no-head-contact divisions (the intent of the judges being fully recorded), but may lead to a less accurate match result in other divisions as inexperienced judges press the top button for body shots. Training is the key to accurate scoring.
There should not be a visual cue when the disabled top button is pressed. Currently you see the yellow for top button and blue for trigger. Nothing should appear when the disabled top button is pressed. That can serve as a clue for the judge that they should not be pressing the top button. At the same time, however, it should be made very obvious to the TA, so they can have the center referee pull in the corners and remind them that head shots do not score in that division. Could we have a popup box appear, or a flashing black circle/square under that judges scoring column on the TA's screen only? Popup box might be too disruptive. It's a good thing when a hand controller becomes disconnected, but this is a less critical issue. So some type of flashing alert under the judges scoring column would be sufficient, I think. The TA could then determine if the top button press was a one-time thing that the judge corrected or if they are hitting it repeatedly and need to be refreshed on the rule set that is in effect.
While we're discussing... can there be some type of visual clue on both screens to indicate which set of rules are in effect for the particular match? At both qualifiers I worked we naturally had matches from no-head-contact, JSR, and adult rules divisions. Some of them were intermixed, however. It got confusing sometimes which rule set was in effect. Usually the question initiated from a corner judge and it was clarified by the center and TA. So the right thing happened in each match, but it added some time to the day. Perhaps the competitors' names could appear in a different color depending on what rules they are fighting under? Something with the color scheme would be a subtle way to do it, although I realize that is part of RingMaster's identity. Anything that is easy to see from chair 2 and 3. There is less need for this at Juniors, where the rules mainly change from day to day based on which age groups are fighting. At qualifiers it changes more rapidly.
One more thing that I know has come up before. This requires some thought, but I think it would really help if the squares showing which judges scored a point would flash for about 3-5 seconds after the point goes up. We don't want the scores themselves to flash, but the squares indicating the scoring judges should. That would really help the center referee determine if a point just went up when they want to do an 8-count or wave off a point.

Jay - I am a little late to this discussion -
I think it would be great to set-up this feature - Choice #1 ... To ignore a signal for a head kicks when the rules don't allow a score.
I would much-rather prefer to have a judge push a button for a head kick - than to try and remember within a split second - can I score a head kick for this age group. I am sure that after sitting in a corner all day long - that the ability to add this extra step when deciding to push the button - has resulted in a no confirmation for a head point.
--> It would be important - that this choice be available for off-line adjustment as well as the automatic Tournament Master adjustments.
This way - we would be able to have the judges function at local events (where Tournament Master is not being used) using the same push-the-button mind set as judges would be using at National events.
We have been training our computer operators - to review the competitor age as divisions change and adjust the head kick score settings... It would be a logical step to add the "No Head Score."
