Congratulations to Linda and Paul Kimmich on the success of their daughter Darcy: From the USAT Website...

Darcy Kimmich Wins Silver Medal as World University Championships Conclude
July 20, 2008
by Dan Chuang
Women's team captain Darcy Kimmich (welter) had the best result of the tournament for team USA, earning a silver medal. She scored wins over athletes from Taekwondo powerhouses Chinese Taipei and Korea in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Against Chinese Taipei, she won by superiority in sudden death after a 2-2 score during the first 3 rounds. Against Korea, she won by a score of 1-0. In the finals, Darcy fought Poland, where she lost by a score of 2-1 in a tightly contested match that wasn't decided until the final minute. Darcy was much loved by the Serbians whom she had met throughout the week; a group of Serbian fans wore customized t-shirts spelling "GO DARCY!!!" and cheered her loudly throughout all her matches, creating an electric atmosphere in the stadium.

At the Referee Refresher
By Jenny @ 5:56 AM :: 64 Views :: 1 Comments ::
Who is that in the second row, center, of the picture of the attendees to the Olympic Referee Refresher Course? ( http://www.wtf.org/site/news/wtf.htm?realnum=225&mode=view ) None other than our Referee Co-Chair, Leon Preston. What is that expression about? We aren't sure and some of the suggestions aren't suitable for reproduction here but we all have our eyes on Master Preston as he represents us in China.

TRUE meeting?
By Jenny @ 5:24 AM :: 41 Views :: 0 Comments
And what, you may ask, happened at the TRUE meeting?

No, you didn't sleep thru it, there was no TRUE meeting. Due to the late evenings, we never were able to find a time to have the meeting.

In the next week we will be posting the financial statement, and a brief communications report, and a professional development report.

To foreshadow these reports, we will mention that, as discussed at the 2005 annual meeting, TRUE has purchased video cameras to be used for referee education. The three cameras and tripods currently reside with our treasurer who began recording referees at Juniors. We are developing a program for adding commentary and distributing the videos to members. Look for more information in coming weeks.

Even though there was no meeting, Do'nt forget to pay your dues.

Support Medical
By Jenny @ 6:19 AM :: 64 Views :: 0 Comments
Once again, there is no way we can say enough about the value of our medical services. Trish Bare and her team at Bare Essentials Sports Medicine make it possible for us to feel we are providing a safe environment for competitors to play in. If you've reffed a large game without the support of Trish's team, you know what I mean. We sometimes don't know how good we have it, until we don't.

Those of you who were in Detroit this past week already know this, but Trish lost a grandchild to drowning a couple of weeks ago. I am sure everyone will want to send good thoughts her way at a time like this.

Trish's organization does benefit from donations. I hope you will join me in visiting the website www.bareessentialssportsmedicine.com and making a donation.

Home at Last
By Jenny @ 10:50 AM :: 54 Views :: 1 Comments ::
Well the Nationals and Juniors are over for another year. Hopefully you all made it home safely.

I must be getting old. 6 days of competition, many of them lasting late, plus driving the 3:30 AM Shuttle back to the airport, I just now recovered enough to post this.

What can we say about this event? There were more than the usual number of issues at the hotel. Nearly everyone ended up with a single King size bed as opposed to the usual double beds. That took most of the evening to get straightened out. The staff of the Renaissance Marriott could work on their attitude just a bit.

It was just shy of a mile from the hotel to the venue. Transportation was supposed to be by the People Mover, a one way elevated train system, to within 4 blocks of the venue, then shuttle by 6 passenger van the rest of the way. It took about 20 minutes, what with waiting for the train, then the shuttle. Walking took about 18 minutes. Since the train only went one way, it took about 30 minutes to go back to the hotel. Most everyone elected to walk. That worked fine except on the day when it rained....

The venue was ok for us. I don't know how the competitors felt. Ford field sure had a lot of rules. No candy on the field? Thank god for the smugglers of KICKS Taekwondo. Imagine a tournament with no Chocolate! The staff was incredibly friendly. They told us they were used to dealing with drunk people, so we were extremely easy. Ron Rose's volunteers were awesome. Marco Mark, coming all the way from California to help was invaluable. As we all know, without volunteers the best planned tournament will fail.

The competition was better than ever. The competitors are what this is all about. Since they get better every year, the overall tournament can only get better too. There was some mix up in competition poomsae. Vicky Serbin had requested the software they used in Stanford, and computers to run it. That equipment didn't become available until 5 pm, so the certified poomsae referees ended up working very late into the evening.

The food...well that's always an issue. We are probably the pickiest bunch of people around, but after the forth day they had run out of ways to cook chicken and started repeating themselves. This brings us to our party.

The food for the party was very disappointing. Can you say Tacos? But afterwards...Ron Rose's band was awesome. Mass dancing. Much fun. Unfortunately we didn't learn until 8 o'clock that the venue was only rented until 9. Way too short.

In any event, we got to see great fights and great poomsae. And we got to spend time with our friends, and there is not much in life that beats time spent with friends.

The day is fast approaching...
By Jenny @ 4:07 PM :: 58 Views :: 2 Comments ::
Only a few more days until we will be welcoming you all to Michigan.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

Make sure you give the USAT your flight itinerary. It costs in the neighborhood of $60 to take a cab from the airport to the hotel. If you are unable to get them to pick you up for some reason, contact us (fionn_mkuehl@hotmail.com) and we will attempt to help you out.

Michigan is having mini versions of the storms Iowa is getting. It is hot and humid (80-90 deg) in the daytime but cools down (50 deg) at night.

The TRUE meeting will be Wednesday, after the event is over. We won't know where until we get there and find a location, but we'll have fliers to hand out. The Tentative agenda is below:

Proposed agenda for TRUE meeting at 2008 Nationals/Junior Olympics in Detroit, MI

1. Call to order
2. Approval of agenda
3. *Approval of Minutes of the July 15, 2007 meeting
4. Treasurers Report
5. Old business
a. Goals and Objectives
• Member Discussion-How to achieve our goals
6. New Business

If you will be unable to make it to the meeting, please register your thought on goals and objectives here on the website.

What to do in Detroit?

Festivals...

Closer to the venue, in fact only a couple of miles away, we will find the Comerica CityFest 2008 (www.newcenter.com/cityfest/info.htm). Running from July 2 thru the 6th from 11:30 am to 11 pm, Detroit will bring you the best of food, music and entertainment, for FREE!

Alas we will miss the amazing display of fireworks over the Detroit river. Detroit shares its Independence Day celebration with its neighbor to the South (yes, south) Canada. The traditional (for Michigan) Freedom Festival celebration occurs on June 23rd. Bummer.

What to do in Detroit?
By Jenny @ 4:35 AM :: 52 Views :: 0 Comments
Camping, Biking, Hiking, now this is my thing.

Michigan is an amazing place to visit (or live) if you are an appreciator of the outdoors. When the last Glaciers melted off of Michigan 10,000 years ago, they left behind thousands of small lakes and four really big ones.

The Great Lakes are just that, Great. Sugar sand beaches of Lake Michigan on the west side of the state, rocky beaches of northern Lake Superior, fishing and boating on Lake Erie and St. Claire at Detroit’s front door, Michigan has more freshwater coast line than any other state.

Michigan has ten National Parks, from rugged Isle Royal to the rolling dunes of Sleeping Bear (www.thingstodo.com/states/MI/nationalparks/index.htm). There are almost 500 State Parks (http://www.michigandnr.com/ParksandTrails/Listing.aspx) and each County has several parks (http://www.findthefun.com/lists/vxMI83.htm) with camping and biking at most of them, hiking in all of them. Hartwick pines in the center of the state, represents some of the last of the virgin pine forests that once blanketed the northern Midwest, and were cut to build this country. The Irish Hills, just south of my hometown, is an astonishing example of a huge glacial moraine, with its varied and various terrain and ecologies.

Even Michigan’s agricultural country, while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, can be impressive. Millions of bushels of beans, corn, wheat, and sugar beets make their way from the rich soil of mid-Michigan to your table. You’ll miss the strawberry harvest, which ends just before our event, but you’ll be just in time for the cherry harvest. Michigan is one of the four largest producers of cherries in the US. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the Cherry Festival in Traverse City in Northern Michigan, running at the same time as our tournament.

Schedule a few extra days and bring your bikes, fishing poles and tents. Michigan is the place to go for outdoors adventure.

Today's the day...
By Jenny @ 3:52 AM :: 38 Views :: 0 Comments
Been procrastinating? Time to get moving, today is the last day to register for Juniors/Nationals in Detroit.

The party plans are set. The USAT has set up a party for us at the venue on the 6th. GM Ron Rose's band will be playing, there is to be room for dancing, gathering, and just hanging out.

Lois Schonbrun suggests we submit requests...And has one of her own.
