Been procrastinating? Time to get moving, today is the last day to register for Juniors/Nationals in Detroit.

The party plans are set. The USAT has set up a party for us at the venue on the 6th. GM Ron Rose's band will be playing, there is to be room for dancing, gathering, and just hanging out.

Lois Schonbrun suggests we submit requests...And has one of her own.

Amusement parks

The indisputable king of amusement parks, home of more and higher roller coasters than any other park in the world is Cedar Point (www.cedarpoint.com). Less than an hour south of Detroit in Sandusky, Ohio, Cedar Point has 17 roller coasters including the Magnum XL 200, the highest, fastest anywhere in the world.

A bit further afield is Muskegeon, about 3 hours north and west of Detroit. The home of 2 amusement parks, there are no fewer than 8 more parks within 40 miles of Muskegeon. If you are an amusement park fan, you’ll want to spend several days in the area

We cannot pass up the biggest museum of all, Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. A little far afield for those without cars, this complex is the premier museum of 19th and 20th century American History. Especially for car people, this is a not to be missed experience.

What to do in Detroit?

You might say to yourself, "Self, there is obviously a Baseball field right across from the venue, why hasn't she mentioned that?"

Because the Tigers are on the road the whole time we'll be there. Bummer.

But how about Museums?

Science, art, music, history, Detroit has a museum for you.

Within easy travel distance of the venue (in fact you can walk to many of them) you’ll find the Detroit Science Center (sciencedetroit.org), the Motown Historical Museum‎ (Motownmuseum.com), the newly remodeled Detroit Institute of Arts‎ (dia.org), the Detroit Historical Museum‎ (detroithistorical.org), the Arab American National Museum‎ (arabamericanmuseum.org), the Charles H Wright Museum of African-American History (maah-detroit.org), the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum (tuskeegeeairmen.org)‎ and the Museum of Contemporary Art‎ (mocadetroit.org)

Personally, I hope to have time to go the the Detroit Institute of Arts while we're in town.

Casinos?

Again, an entertainment form that escapes me, but Detroit is well provided with some pretty nice casinos.

Within easy walking distance of the hotel and the venue, you'll find the sprawling complex that is the newly completed MGM Grand, the Greektown Casino and the Ojibwa and Sault Marie Indian Casinos. More ways to lose your money than anyone really needs.

How about Golf?

Golf is a sport that totally escapes me. I just don't understand why it is so popular, but in Michigan, if you don't golf, you ain't nobody.

Three of the top 100 courses in the United States are in Michigan (http://www.golflink.com/top-golf-courses/). Looks to me like there are a ton of courses in the Detroit area (http://michigan.twoguyswhogolf.com/southeast.html or http://www.michigangolf.com/destination-guides/detroit-metro.htm)

Like I said, golf is a mystery to me, but I know a lot of you really enjoy it so include it in your plans for your trip to Michigan.

Memorial Day
By Jenny @ 8:06 AM :: 38 Views :: 0 Comments
We all dream of a day when humans are able to form a nation without blood, fire, and iron. Until that day we all owe our lives to those who gave theirs.

Today, in the United States, we remember those who gave, and are giving, their health, wealth and very lives to make it possible for us to live in peace and freedom.

Thank you.

Still Looking...

...for your input. Any alternate suggestions for time or location for the referee camp? It wasn't that hard to find a place for the training. An instructor willing to volunteer his dojang (thanks GM Ron Rose), a nearby hotel at $60 a night rooms and a free breakfast, and a close in decent sized airport. The Referee Co-chairs want to know what you think.

All of the on-line registration is now functional for both Juniors and Seniors. Register early, register often. The referee's party will be the best ever.

In the next few weeks we'll be posting a few things to do in the general vicinity of Detroit. Amusement parks, Museums, Restaurants, Events, Concerts etc. If there is any information you'd like to know about the area we will try to find it out. Let us know what you want to know.

See you in Detroit!
